This past weekend, Westfield State University’s chapter of SEAM hosted their annual “Read Across Westfield” event to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Their campus gymnasium was flooded with students from the local Elementary Schools eager to participate in all of the fun.

As a spinoff of NEA’s “Read Across America”, Read Across Westfield encourages young students to engage in literacy-related activities. Their SEAM chapter even donated free books from Scholastic to their attendees.

Engagement stations that entertained the little visitors included: sand art, Cat in the Hat cut-out headwear, face painting, coloring, puzzles, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” fishing, reading, and “Pin the Hat on the Cat”.

Fun Fact: Read Across Westfield was started by Erinne Silver, a former SEAM member, and one of SEAM’s Co-Chairs. Erinne is currently a classroom teacher in Sharon.

If the SEAM chapter on your campus is interested in hosting an event similar to this, please contact Bob Whalen at
